Bristol Flying School

Bristol, UK.
As one of the fastest growing regional airports, Bristol International Airport
needed to expand and create more apron space. For this expansion to
take place, it was necessary to relocate Bristol Flying Club from the north
side of the airport to the south side, and provide additional light aircraft
parking. Civil engineers BAM Nuttall chose REIDsteel to construct the
new steel buildings.

Construction of the 30m by 60m steel portal frame maintenance hangar was undertaken on a design and build basis, whilst the new 2-storey steel framed office building was designed by the client’s own team. Maximum clear entry was required for the hangar, but as the office building was built just a few metres to the right of the hangar, there was only room for an outrigger to the left of the doors. REIDsteel were able to overcome building space limitations, and design a practical and economical hangar which met all of the specifications.

Close liaison with airport staff and enforcement of a strict safety regime on the contract enabled safe completion of the works with minimal disruption to ongoing operational activities at the airport.

Malta Aircraft Museum

We built this beautiful 23m clear span hangar for the Malta Aircraft
Museum in 2005.

The project was funded by donations from ex WW2 veterans and the style had to reflect the era of the Second World War and houses a Supermarine Spitfire, a Hawker Hurricane and period Anti Aircraft Guns as well as other WW2 memorabilia.

Malta, the George Cross Island, is rightly proud of its steadfast resistance to the tyranny that swept across Europe during the 1930s and 40s.

The roof, walls and hangar doors all consist of 40mm thick composite cladding.

KLM Hangar Extension

Norwich International Airport, UK

KLM UK Engineering who specialise in the maintenance, repair and
overhaul of aircraft, have their main base at Norwich International Airport.
Due to existing and new contracts KLM were in need of more space and
increased tail entry height.

They decided to refurbish an existing hangar which incorporated a 10 metre hangar extension supplied and erected by REIDsteel to accommodate a fabric megadoor with drop down posts which was supplied and installed by others.

The hangar can now house the new version of the Boeing 737.

Main Contractor for the project was May Gurney, and the hangar doors are of the fabric Megadoor type in 3 panels. The middle door section being 15m height and 10m width, and the panels either side reducing in height to 11.5m high but increasing in width to 17.5m to make a 45m overall door width.
