Rizon Hangar, Biggin Hill
Bahrain-based airline, Rizon Jet, have selected REIDsteel to design, manufacture and erect their new MRO hangar and fixed base operation (FBO) at Biggin Hill Airport, London. The contemporary and stylish aircraft terminal will be the Rizon Jet European Base, and will cover a total area of 13,000m2.

Construction has already begun with the erection of a REIDsteel multi-span propped portal frame. The building will span 121m x 36.5m, 16.7m high, with two maintenance floors and two FBO floors. We are also supplying all of the accessories, including cladding, curtain walling, windows, doors and staircases.

The MRO hangar will be equipped with a REIDsteel electrically operated hangar door, providing an entrance 59.6m wide x 10.2m high, as well as four crane beams to support two REIDsteel underslung cranes. The cranes will have a span of 36.5m and a down-shop length of 88m, and will be controlled by remote control.

Helicopter Hangar for Scatsta Airport, Shetland Isles
REIDsteel completed this helicopter hangar at Scatsta Airport earlier this year. It is a 2 span propped portal framed building, 80m x 41m, with 7.5m clear height. The rear elevation has a full gable frame to permit future end extension, and the steel is hot dip galvanised.

The REIDsteel hangar door has 12 slabs on 3 tracks, giving an entrance 78m wide by 6m high. The minimum clear opening across the door width is 26m. REIDs supplied and installed system 'K' personnel doors, and a single girder overhead crane spanning 14m, with 60m travel.

5% of the roof area is polycarbonate Safespan factory sealed roof lights, to provide natural light within the hangar.

Lufthansa Technik is the world market leader in maintenance, repair and overhaul of commercial aircraft, their engines and components.

To further expand and develop their company, LTM have chosen REIDsteel to design and manufacture a new maintenance complex in Malta, with two bays in addition to current services. There are 3 hangars, in total: 2 wide body hangars 90m x 90m x 26, and 1 narrow body hangar 90m x 66m x 15m.

The hangars are REIDsteel patent Archspan frames, with REIDsteel partitioning, cladding, wall vents, insulation and gutters. We also designed and manufactured the 332 tonne hangar doors.

The narrow body hangar has a door with 6 slabs on 3 tracks, giving clear entrance of 60m wide, left, right or centre, by 15m clear height. The two higher hangars have 12 doors slabs on 3 tracks, giving an entrance up to 120m wide open left, right or centre, with 26m height overlapping on each hangar.

The central wide body hangar and the narrow body hangar have now been completed. The new facility will be able to accommodate 2 wide-body aircraft simultaneously, as well as having a number of workshops within it. The construction of these hangars will bring value to the national economy and create hundreds of new jobs.

This 132 metre wide hangar for Emirate Airlines with a clear entry height of 20 metres and two 66 metre spans, was designed to take 2 Airbus A320-200 jets. The steelwork was designed, fabricated and shipped by us in 8 weeks and erected by local engineers in record time. The Main Contractor was Dutco Balfour Beatty.

We also designed, made and shipped the 1300 tonne structure for the Air Cargo Terminal in 12 weeks which was also erected in record time.

With an 80 metre span and an overall height of 20 metres allowing 13.5 metres clearance, this was not just another shed for aeroplanes. It was part of a precision built complex for fitting out BAE 146 'Whispering Jet' Airliners and contains sophisticated equipment such as four 3.2 tonne overhead travelling cranes with rails levelled by laser beam to fine limits.

A constant temperature heating plant and a fire protection system were built in. The structure also incorporates a structurally independent Annexe with design and administrative offices and stores.

The electrically operated doors, with built-in personnel doors and patent glazing, are fully insulated, and have anemometer controlled cut outs to prevent opening in high winds.

This 85 metres clear span hangar, which has a clear tailgate entry height of 19.8 metres and a clear mid height inside of 24 metres, is big enough to take most aircraft flying today. The hangar was designed, fabricated and erected by us. We also did all the civils work, including foundations, floor slabs and apron.

It is used by FR Aviation in association with sister company, Flight Refueling Ltd, who pioneered inflight refueling, to convert big commercial jets into fuel carrying tankers.

The aircraft in this photograph is an RAF VC 10 refuelling tanker.

This 85 metres clear span hangar for Monarch Aircraft Engineering, is for maintenance of airliners up to jumbo size. We did the steelwork design, fabrication, erection and cladding of the hangar and its electrically operated doors and the two storey office at the side, as well as making and fitting the double glazed aluminium windows in the offices and main doors.

The cladding of the doors, roof and walls is double-skinned and insulated. Note the high proportion of natural daylight from the double skinned translucent panels in the roof and walls.

The aircraft in the bottom picture is a wide bodied DC 10.

In this instance the customer specified the use of lifting fabric doors, which were supplied by Megadoor. They are 76m wide and 20m high and required our team of designers, draughtsmen, fabricators and erectors to work very closely with the fabric door supplier.

The contractor who did all the site civil work was the Limerick branch of John Sisk & Son Ltd, whose head office is in Dublin.

We also did the structure for the administration building on the side of the hangar, including all the curtain walling, windows, glazing & entrance doors.
